The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) made a significant announcement on Tuesday, revealing that the prize money for the winner of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) holding in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024 has been substantially increased by 75%.
As a result, the champions of the 8th edition of the tournament will now receive a hefty amount of $3.5m.
CAF also revealed a 32% increase in the overall prize pool for the upcoming tournament which now stands at $10.4m.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe hailed the prize money boost, stressing the vital role the CHAN tournament plays in advancing African football: “The CHAN is an important Competition for the development and growth of Africa-based football players and talented young players and will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness of African football and CAF Competitions,” he said.
This Competition is part of our strategy of investing in African football and making it appealing and attractive to football fans, TV viewers, sponsors, partners and other stakeholders in Africa and worldwide,” the Chairman added.
The 8th African Nations Championship will feature 18 teams, including co-hosts Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, as well as Angola, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Madagascar, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger Republic, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sudan, and Zambia.
The draw for the tournament is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 15 January 2025 at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre in Nairobi, Kenya as teams discover their fate ahead of the continental showpiece.
