– Efforts ongoing to award contract for new stadium at Araromi Street in Akure

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa said the state government would continue to prioritize sports in the scheme of things and also pay attention to the welfare of athletes.

Aiyedatiwa made the remark in his speech at the occasion to commemorate the 2024 Olympic Day held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.

The Olympic day in Ondo state led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Olympians and sports men and women started from the Government house ground to the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure to mark the 2024 Olympic Day celebration.

Governor Aiyedatiwa who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami said his administration have always maintained that sports is a good avenue for social interaction and integration amongst youths in the state and country at large.

He said “Sports is very dear to our hearts in Ondo state and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a chosen career to gainfully employ the youth.”

According to him, the state would continue to espouse the objective of the Olympic celebration which among others was to promote national unity and grassroots sports development in the country.

“The contract for the rehabilitation of Ondo State Sports Complex has been awarded by the state government to a reputable contractor to make the facility meet international standard for the use of the sports loving people of Ondo state. Other stadias in Ondo, Ikare, Ile Oluji will also be awarded soon to meet the yearnings and aspiration of the people.”

“Efforts are going on to award the contract of the new stadium at Araromi Street in Akure to decentralize the over stretching of facility at Ondo State Sports Complex and to enhance sports development in the state. Our administration will continue to give necessary priority to sports”.

In his welcome address, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye said the sustainability of the event was a clear indication that sports is a veritable instrument for the promotion of global peace.

“The extension of the event to Ondo state is a clear indication that sports promote global peace. It is the commitment of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to prioritize sports and engage the youths meaningful through sporting activities. Sports facilities are upgraded all over the state. Ondo state athletes are able to compete with their counterpart outside the state and winning laurels thereby representing Nigeria in international competitions”.

Representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Sylvester Ikuejamoye noted that sport keeps the mind and body strong and healthy.

Highpoint of the event was a short display by the three Guinness World Record holders in Rope Skipping and presentation of certificates to the Governor and others.
