Tobi Amusan’s long wait for a global medal materialised on the last day of the World Championships in Oregon, becoming Africa’s first ever GOLD medalist in the women’s 100m Hurdles in a time of 12.06s.

At the sound of the gun, Amusan exploded out of the blocks and left no margin for error, running clear of former WR holder Kendra Harrison after the 4th hurdle. Jamaican Britany Anderson tried to keep up with the 2021 Diamond Trophy winner and was rewarded for her efforts with the Silver in 12.23s, as Olympic Champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn settled for Bronze with the same time.

Amusan has had a phenomenal World Championship, setting an African Record (12.42s) in the heat, before setting a World Record (12.12s) in the Semifinal.

Her time of 12.06s in the final wouldn’t stand as a Word Record due to wind, but it’s enough to make her Nigeria and Africa’s first world champion in the 100mh, moving one better of compatriot, Glory Alozie who won silver at the Sevilla 1999.

In the long jump event, Nigeria’s bronze medalist at the Olympics, Ese Brume also added a silver medal on the final day, leaping to 7.02m jump to finish second.
