Ondo State will compete in Beach Volleyball and Handball at the forthcoming 2023 National Youth Games (NYG) scheduled for Delta state after both sports scaled the hurdle of qualification at the South West ball games elimination in Ilaji, Oyo State
The two ball games will be selected among other sports which team Ondo will be participating to do the state proud at the U-15 Youth games.
Ondo State contingent had gone to the South West zonal elimination with four ball games including; Beach Volleyball, handball, Basketball and Hockey, only Beach Volleyball and Handball qualified in the three days competition to decide which state will represent the zone in the ball games.
The General Manager of the Ondo State Sports Council, Mr. Henry Babatunde in a chat with Newsmen commended the athletes and their coaches for the outing at the zonal elimination.
Babatunde said the outcome of the elimination has given the state confidence that they will perform creditably well at the game proper, saying they will come up with the numbers of games that will be going to the Youth Games proper in Delta state based on the resources available.
He disclosed that the contingent will have a week camping before departing the state for the games proper.
He added that the management of the council is optimistic of good outing at the 7th Youth Games, saying the state is blessed with great talents that can do the state proud.
He said: “We have no doubt in our mind, that we are going to surpass our performance in Ilorin, we are not going to rest on our oars, while we are working on the number of games going to the competition proper, the coaches will continue with their training”.
“Our expectations that if the athletes are well motivated and encourage, they will participate in Asaba and do the state proud,” he said.
