The Ondo state House of Assembly has explained why the parliamentarians should not be begging executive or anybody for proper legislative funding.
“It is highly imperative to create an enabling environment for Legislative and judicial autonomy to thrive in order to guarantee a robust relationship among the three arms of government.”
This was the submission of the Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable Oleyelogun Bamidele David at a workshop on fiscal autonomy for the 26 members of the Ondo State House of Assembly in Akure.
Rt. Honourable Oleyelogun maintained that implemation of fiscal autonomy by the Judiciary and Legiislature would usher in optimal level of performance and enhance the delivery of democracy dividends to the people.
The Speaker who was represented by his deputy, Rt. Honourable Ogundeji Iroju observed that the sensitization workshop on fiscal autonomy would further xray the administrative structure and policies of the parliament with a view to achieving the desired organizational goals and objectives through prudent expenditure.
Oleyelogun noted that the workshop would further guide the lawmakers on application of the principles of transparency and accountability in public service.
The Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Honourable Sunday Olajide said the workshop would provide the avenue for the lawmakers to have a first hand knowledge on their new status when the law finally becomes operational.
In his presentation, one of the keynote speakers, Mr Jerry Igbokwe, during the technical session urged the lawmakers to be fully aware of their responsibilities and mandate to their respective constituencies He added that the legislature as an arm of government is crucial to the sustenance of democracy.
The one day sensitization workshop, was targeted at creating a deeper understanding on the concept of financial and administrative autonomy for state legislatures in Nigeria.
“It was meant to position the parliament in a better stead to efficiently benefit from the legislative fiscal autonomy.
“Implemation of the state legislatures and judiciary financial autonomy law is yet to come into effect long after it was assented to by president Muhammadu Buhari.
The one day sensitisation workshop on fiscal autonomy in Ondo State had in attendance all the lawmakers except the Speaker who was in Abuja to attend to a state function with the President.
